Getting There

It is easy to experience the sights and sounds of Amsterdam with P&O Ferries. It took me less than a four hour drive from Calais, so you can take your car across the Channel from Dover and make your own way there. Alternatively you can take the ferry from Hull to the Europoort port in Rotterdam and use the train service, or take a P&O Minicruise from Hull straight to Amsterdam.

Accommodation

Holland’s capital features a large mix of budget accommodation and more expensive hotels so you can easily find the best place to stay that suits your budget. Even in the centre of the Amsterdam will provide beds for relatively cheap, so if you decide a hostel is better suited to your wallet then you still won’t have to worry too much about taxi costs. The hostel I stayed in was not central but as I took my car on my P&O Ferry trip it wasn’t too much of an issue as I could drive to where you wanted to go.

Food and drink

Amsterdam is well known for its café culture, and I was pleasantly surprised to find good quality Dutch and international cuisine available throughout the city. If you wish to sample the strong and flavoursome local beers or Dutch gins then there are plenty of canalside pubs for you to relax in. There is plenty of food available on the P&O Ferry during your crossing, including cafés, restaurants and Mayfair’s famous Langan’s Brasserie.

Sights and Activities in Amsterdam

So you’ve taken your P&O Ferry and made your way to Amsterdam, what should you do when you get there? There was a huge amount for me to see and do, from art museums, jazz cafes and nightclubs, to experimental theatre, bohemian shops and grand churches. Popular places to visit include Anne Frank’s house, the Van Gogh Museum and the NEMO science centre. I even added a little sparkle to my trip my visiting a diamond factory!
